Misc. Stuff from the Week

Thursday night I joined my friends Jared, Case, and Lea (well, ok, I just met Lea Thursday) for martinis at Lan Bar, a really cool club. I had to take a picture of the over-the-top mirrored bathroom.

Construction cranes are everywhere here. They work around the clock! Apparently, there are some workers who are only allowed to work at night--and they do it because they need the work. Contruction workers are poorly paid, but given housing on the site. For larger buildings, these become little villages of 10X10 trailer-type structures. On some sites, I've seen the men living in large canvas tents.

I've been asked how much coverage the Sichuan Earthquake is getting. Not too much. There are some posters around our hotel, showing pictures and urging people to give. China Daily (the English language paper) runs some sort of story on a regular basis and keeps a running toll of dead, missing, and injured. Above is the Starbucks near our office building, where the traditional Starbucks Community Board is taken over with Earthquake coverage. Click on the photo to see more detail.

I have to order my drinks with a 3rd shot of espresso at Starbucks here, or they're too weak. Yesterday, I had a red bean scone with my caramel macchiato. It was actually pretty good!
