Rescind

I must rescind my earlier statement regarding alcohol regulation in Beijing. Last night and tonight again, we saw the police stopping cars at an intersection to make the drivers take a breathalizer test. It's an electronic box they have to blow into, and it's immediate. Last night, the driver of the car in front of me was pulled out of his car and walked to the sidewalk, and the police drove his car away! They did not, however, test the breath of the taxi drivers last night or tonight, so it is possible that people's stories about taxi drivers drinking are true. Our driver tonight laughed about the breathalizer so hard that I thought he must have been drinking. When he nearly ran down a woman on the sidewalk entering our complex, I felt certain that he must have been drinking and just survived a close call with the police!
