Dick & Barb Do the Olympics
Mom & Dad arrived Thursday at noon and stopped by my office to say hi. They wandered the city a bit, and then I sent them off to Pacific Coliseum to catch the Men's Figure Skating Long Program. Trevor and I had to finish up some things at our respective jobs, so we arrived a little later. During a break, we saw Katarina Witt and Viktor Petrenko in the Olympic Family area (from a distance - we didn't have access.) We saw the last half of the competition, including Evan Lysacek's Gold Medal-Winning routing, and Evgeny Plushenko's powerful routine and arrogant antics. He held up Number One fingers at the end, and when he went to take the podium, he climbed onto the Bronze platform, over the Gold platform, and onto his Silver platform, where he belonged. After the presentation of the medals, he left the picture-taking in the media area to rip off his medal and storm out of the arena in advance of his competitors. Trevor and I tried to get our picture with the Swiss skater afterward, but he declined. We had to settle for a picture with former Canadian Olympian, Emmanuel Sandhu. Since we'd eaten pizza at the venue, I dropped Mom & Dad off at home and went for some dancing at Odyssey with my friends.
The parents had an early morning on Friday. I sent them up to the mountains for Alpine Skiing. They took a cab to Langara College, where the Olympic Bus Network took them up to Whistler Creekside for the Men's Super G race. They met me at work afterward, and I sent them down to the Vancouver Victory Ceremony to see the medals awarded for the event they saw. They were a bit late, so they just saw the end. I joined them and we listened to the first few songs of the band, Theory of a Deadman, but hard rock isn't really their thing, so then we took off. I took them to Habit for dinner and Mom enjoyed the Chicken Soup, Dad the Venison Sloppy Joe, and I the Steak Frites. The truffle-scented fries with aoli were amazing! Mom & Dad were exhausted from their mountain day (and hot, because they were still wearing their long underwear and were a bit sunburnt) so we went home after dinner and crashed.
Today, I'm working, Mom & Dad are wandering the city, and we're headed to the Germany vs. Belarus hockey game tonight!
