What A Week

I tend to believe that life has a balance, whether you call that Karma, or God only giving you what you can handle, whatever. This week has been crazy. After a great Super Bowl party at Jacob's building, with all of my friends, and a few drinks at Sidetrack afterward, I woke up on Monday morning to head off to an 8am meeting in the city. Who schedules an 8am meeting the day after the Super Bowl? (My District Visual Manager, that's who!) Now, my car had been in the shop since the previous Monday for "re-certification" as a used car, as I've decided to buy it at the end of its lease. Vinny had been so kind as to loan me his car, but apparently on Sunday night, I hadn't been so kind as to turn off the car's headlights, and found a dead battery on my arrival. I hoofed it over to Halsted to catch the bus to the meeting, which went well despite the fact that I arrived 15 minutes late. I'd forgotten my materials for the meeting at work the previous day, but the DVM was kind enough to lend me an extra book.

After the meeting, I set about getting Vinny's car running again, and after frustrated dealings with BMW Roadside Assistance (it's not a BMW, we can't jumpstart it,) the manager of Joe Perillo BMW (who simply did nothing after telling me he'd send someone) and my salesperson Ken, I finally got someone to give me a jump. On principle, I didn't want to pay a garage to jump it, because my car was in the shop, and I hadn't been given a loaner, so I felt the least they could do was jump the car I'd borrowed while they had mine in for service for 8 days!

An hour later, I got a reminder call from Lyric Opera with my call times for Cavalleria Rusticana. Saturday's Piano Run Through? What? That wasn't on my calendar. After a panicked call to the Administration, I discovered that my contract would not allow me to miss this rehearsal, and so I would need to cancel my planned trip to Orlando this weekend. Devastated, I headed off to work.

When I returned from work and turned on the dishwasher, my sink started to fill with gray water. As I tried to unclog the clog by plunging, the water just turned black! I emailed the building manager, and emptied the sink with a bucket so maintenance could take care of it on Tuesday morning.

After a Monday like that, I knew the rest of the week would have to be better.

Tuesday, I picked up MY CAR after work. I even signed the paperwork making it my car! And I got it for .9% financing; who's offering loans like that right now?

Wednesday, I requested some time off in April, only to find out that another manager had already been granted that same week, and I wouldn't be able to go. Then, the District Manager called me in to the office and let me know that he'd like for me to act as the General Manager of another store while their GM is on Maternity leave, starting in March! I'll get the chance to prove that I'd be a great General Manager, and now I can take my vacation in April, because I'll be at a different store!

Balance: this week has had swings of extreme highs and extreme lows, and so Case and I had a relaxed brunch at Toast today, followed by a trip to the Garfield Park Conservatory, where the rainforest atmosphere and warmth were so calming. I need to take more time to explore these little gems that Chicago has to offer!
